How has it been a week

Since I've been to Fort Steuben (and still no pictures?) How is it am I leaving tomorrow? I got my rental today. I was hoping for a good SUV because I'm in the market.

I got a Ford Bronco. Sigh. If I wanted an off-roader this would be perfect. I mean it's got four settings for GOAT Mode. The gear shift is it a DIAL that you have to hold down a button and rotate it. OMG why? I would not buy this but it has 3000 miles and I'm ready to go.

I have two museums in Gettysburg I've not seen (which I should have time for when I get there and friday morning), I have both Superman and Fantastic Four at the movie theater that's in the hotel complex. I was going to do the ghost tour but I'll be tired. I'll try it sunday night after the con. I have too much planned for my day and a half in Hershey but I have my plans and NO spreadsheet (evil Little dog will be shocked) because all the museums in both towns are open 7 days a week

And watching Carnival Eats today gave me a bunny for the carnival horror open call. now to get on it

What I Just Finished Reading:

Monster Burger - urban fantasy not quite as fun as the first but still good. It's a fun book. There is a ton of fat issues in this like the other mystery I bitched about but in this case it felt...different. yes his guardian angel and kevin the roach pick on him for being fat but they're both mean. Lloyd knows his weight is an issue in monster hunting BUT his female partner does not mention it at all. I think that might be the difference

What I am Currently Reading:

The Wood - an urban fantasy so far so good

Dark and Dangerous Journey - WWII mystery arc

What I Plan to Read Next:

Pantomine - an LGBT (intersexed main character) fantasy, I like it but i'm shelving it for a bit

I have pictures for you finally )

Word: Ovine

adjective

pertaining to, of the nature of, or like sheep.

---

My post yesterday got a lot of comments about this book:

three bags full

To be honest, I am not enjoying it as much as I expected. It is a bit, um, woolly.

But I am only in the middle of Chapter 8. There are 24. It is translated into English from German but takes place in Ireland. The murder victim is the shepherd, George. The main sheep detective is purportedly Miss Maple (NOT Marple), but the other sheep get equal screen time. There is a black sheep named Othello with a dark tragic past in a circus (and has a grey sheep--a ghost, a memory, it isn't clear--which speaks to him). There are other sheep: Sir Ritchfield, Mopple the Whale, Cloud, and others.

I think the problem with POV animal is setting the rules for what they understand of human world and what they don't. Like they find a clue they call A Thing, I think it's a locket, but I'm not sure. But they know what a spade is. They know what a hat is. They don't know what drugs are (but they know the word 'drugs.'). What are the rules here? There's a priest they call God (because of conversation overheard). There's Ham the butcher, which the sheep all hate. There's different ideas about what happened to George (he was impaled with a spade) and what it means. Some of it is woo-woo. Like the goal of a sheep is to become a cloud in the sky (like heaven? maybe?). The sheep act oddly and you don't know why. There is mist and everyone get confused. They feel guilty (?) and reserve a space in the meadow called George's Place after they eat everything in the garden the morning after the body is found.

I am going to keep trudging on but I am a tiny bit disappointed. The premise is good, though.

Kindness is punk rock

So before I get into the main post, I opened the MCC cards Monday and Tuesday. Overall it was a good haul with 2 signed cards and quite a few shinies. Unfortunately some of them are multiples and are for ones I don’t care for, so I’m hoping there’ll be ways to swap. I am sad I didn’t get the rare Seapeekay, all of the Purpled or 5up cards or the Techno cards. I dunno if it’s worth getting an overstock box when they do them (I dunno how much they’ll be) but people are already selling rares for £15 a pop. Ouch.

The official discord is gonna be opening up trades so fingers crossed there’s uk people interested in ones I have.

Also damnit! I was watching a Fandom live thing on eBay and the price went down 40% and I was gonna try and get it once I’d put my money in. Alas I just checked and it’s gone, fuck. I should’ve just done it on mums and paid the money in there. Ugh that’s gonna annoy me cause it’s so hard to find. (Anyone know a site that has it?)

Anyway today was the cinema trip to see Superman and the mystery showing. To quote Mamma Mia ‘it’s an adventure it’ll be good for you’ so that was my mindset.

I did spent a bit of time looking around the town beforehand, mostly cause of getting to the bank. But damn it is sad. There’s one shopping arcade by the bank and it was just… it had three shops. Three. That was so sad.

From a charity shop I got a DBD of somehting called Paradise Lost and Dispicable Me 2 on blu ray and a purse that looks like a fox. From Game I picked up a black series figure (Morgan from The Mandalorian/Ahsoka/Tales Of The Empire) and a Vulpix and Ninetales set. From Smiths I got the Fantastic 4 comic, though it was sneaky, and two 2025 annuals.

Then it was off to the cinema. Before I saw anything I almost gasped cause the price of the ticket to the Superman showing alone would’ve been almost as much as the month long cinema pass, which is so crazy. So just this trip would’ve more than paid for it.

The trailers for Superman were largely the same as Fantastic 4 - The Odyssey, The Running Man (why does no one simply hide in nature instead of be in a city?), a wrestling thing with Dwayne Johnson (I missed the name and The Life Of Chuck which I know nothing about but I was surprised when it said it was by Stephen King cause it seemed so… I dunno not scary?

Also the trailers for the mystery film . Not a trailer but there was a weird kfc ad that felt cannibal coded because why did a group of people dip a cute guy into water and he came out as a breaded piece of chicken?? Anyway! there was a trailer for The Black Phone 2 and it looks so good that I wanna see it. What is it about October 17th though? There’s the Coheed gig I’m thinking of going to, Pokémon ZA and now this. Then there was Him which I’m really curious about. Then there was The Long Walk which still hasn’t sold me though it is funny that Mark Hamill is in both of the Stephen king trailers (and I didn’t realise he was in walk until comic con. Them there was The Conjuring and Weapons as well as one for Jaws’ 50th anniversary which I’ve not seen in a long time so maybe I will.

Anyway! Superman thoughts.

After Superman I decided to try the cinema food cause of having the discount. There’s a little restaurant and it has nachos, pizza and a few things. Apparently you can get the pizza sent straight up to you in the cinema which is strange. I tried a capri pizza which was nice enough, though they gave you a strange device that beeps when the food is done, which was strange but pretty cool.

Then I went up for the ✨Mystery film✨. What was it? Find out under the cut.

One worry I had was it’d end after a train came and I’d be waiting for 50 minutes for the next one. Luckily I could catch the train without waking. Funnily on the way to the station I noticed a restaurant called the Toro Steakhouse and then also a poster for Walsall pride. I didn’t even know the town had one?? It’s at the end of the month so maybe I’ll go if I have the energy. I might look it for more info.

to be (or not to be???) a fan

I spent all day going through the fanlistings on The Fanlisting Network (and The Anime/Manga Fanlisting Network) to make a list of the ones I wanted to join, because this is apparently a productive use of my time. (In reality, my brain just got activated and I basically did nothing except scroll through the list, open every page I thought I might be interested in, copypasting the link alongside what the subject is in a text document, rinse, repeat, from like 11:30am to 1pm. Then I had lunch. Then I kept going until like 4pm. Then I played Genshin Impact until dinner. Then we played Tales of Graces f (we're almost done with the Zhonecage!!!) and then I kept going until 10pm. Riveting.)

Shielding you from the rambling with a cut. )

Even more 5k writing than I originally thought

As I was doing my own thing, I was reminded that I haven't written any significant fic for antodrew besides the January 5th one and many of things I have for them when it comes to ideas are multi-chapter ideas, so I thought, why not something shorter? I'm not the one to go and start writing something short just because without an idea (as i've learned especially now with the drabble/under 1k fic thing i've had for the first half of the year) so I had to think through it a bit before even getting to write them.

And behold, I did end up having a neat idea.

Modern aus are fun for me, they're quite nice overall, giving me more freedom with idv characters. Antodrew is nice for this since they are more likely to just not be a mess pair like that, when you remove them from their given backstories they have in canon. It makes it nicer to write if I just want to have them get together, which ended up being the topic if the fic. Modern au, they're neighbours and have to share a balcony. There's more there obviously, but that's the summary without giving away most of what I have planned. I will be working on that fic next, so we'll see which one of the others i've chosen will be used once this is done. I just haven't written them much compared to joscarl and alvaluca that I had to give them some attention at least. And this one is nice too, so can't pass up the opportunity.

F for Feral and H for Hostile

As much as I loooove the Sense8 finale (on its own merits as well as just the fact that it exists and Netflix bowed to pressure from fans to give us a conclusion) I will admit it was rushed. Some parts of the episode are a mess and make no sense, and others jump around more than I would prefer, but that opens up wonderful opportunities for missing scene fics! I have a whole series of them under Two and a Half Hours Too Short, and just posted my brand new one Earning that FH.

I initially wanted to explore the conversation on the way to Sans Jour between Wolfgang and Lila, or rather Kala and Lila since Wolfgang doesn't do much talking and Kala would be out for blood, but I figured I'd give the boy a bit of much needed violence first. Anyway, you can read it on AO3 and I'll add it to my Fannish 50 masterlist.

(no subject)

I went swimming this morning, the first time for years.

It was at another Everyone Active gym the next town over, and it was so good to get in the water again. James used one of the two free monthly day passes I get as part of my membership so it cost us nothing, and we were swimming by 8:30am. Which was nice timing as it wasn't busy then.

We swam about an hour, then checked out the spa part, where I got roasted in the sauna for a while, before we headed off.

The pool had impressive disability access, including an excellent, and huge dedicated changing room, complete with a hoist and table to change adults if needed, a sink that could be moved up and down, as well as a sturdy bench, shower and toilet. Plus, a wheelchair that could be pushed and left at poolside. Where there was a lift thing to help people into the water. So, James used that, because the way he's been going lately he probably would have fallen down the steps.

As usual when doing something new, I was a little nervous before going, but no one gave me a second look, and it was a nice and positive experience.

I was at my own gym yesterday and my aim to be invisible remains a no-go. As shown by the fact one of the chatty gym bros decided to show me a photo of what he'd thought was a stomach hernia he had, but was actually a cyst. Not what I expected to see going in.

My Fitbit has given up the ghost, which is sad. I mean, have you even moved unless your steps are tracked? But seriously, I am missing it already and am charging up an old one, which will have to do for now. That's if it works, which I really hope it does.

Two of my favourite shows are back, Masterchef Australia and Celeb SAS, Who Dares Wins. I enjoy both of them so much, but am surprised at how many have dropped out of SAS after just two episodes. I'm rooting for Bimini Bon Boulash who was my favourite back in season 2 UK Drag Race.

Thankfully, the storm didn't hit us too hard here. I lost two containers from the flower shelf, both blown down and broken. While the poor raspberry canes were almost horizontal. But, they're already starting to spring back.

Tomorrow I pick up a mystery fruit and veg box from Re-F-USe. I got one a fortnight ago and they're such good value, £15 for a crate of fresh products that would otherwise be thrown away. I managed to use mostly everything from the last one, even the pak choi. Just the lemons are left, mainly because I got an excess of the things. So, I'm looking forward to seeing what I get tomorrow. Hopefully, not more lemons.

Elderberry juice! I steam juiced elderberries the past two weekends and made jelly last night with half the juice. So much sugar. Lesson learned: there is no such thing as too big a pot. The house might still smell like burnt sugar. The win: i remembered to change out of my new shirt and white pants BEFORE opening the juice. Christine likes the flavor, so this is a jelly that i can make that will replace some fraction of her jelly consumption. I'm thinking 4 pint jars might do it. Then someday i will have mayhaws.... Meanwhile, i fantasize about Clowderwood food gifts for friends and family. I was sick during onion scape season so no pickled onion scapes. But there will be figs a plenty this year. Chestnuts and persimmons as well.

I spent my therapy time looking for ways to get in touch with my banked feelings. Banked, like a campfire is banked. Or shoved in the garage. I probably need to journal more about them: it seems i need to communicate to reach them. They don't come forward on their own easily.

Monday night i was standing on the dark deck -- was it cloudy or partly cloudy? I may have seen a satellite through the clouds -- then i was staring at the woods wondering if i would see a firefly. I think they have gone dark for the season. I thought of how i like to imagine our souls, our being, as waves in a shared sea. I am distinct for a while  and subside into the shared being that is ... the Divine? The unity of earth's life? I can frame it in many ways. But then i remembered the one time in Meeting for Worship where i was meditating about being in the presence of the Divine, and then had the experience of the Divine seeing me. Which was an uncomfortable exalting intensity. On Monday night that memory pulled up pain and anger. For me, that which Is acts through our hands and sees through our eyes. So many US citizens choosing not to see others but to replace them with stereotypes and tell stories and not witness truth. I am so angry and so pained by this. center

A weird day shopping

just nothing quite worked well. Macy's summer clothes either belonged on a 90 year old going to bingo or not on sale. Did find one long sleeved tie-dyed thing left over from last fall on final sale. Got that. it's pretty but I needed it least. I want to replace my short sleeved dress shirts. Most are like 15 years old now.
No joy there.

Also there were SO many people on the roads for 2 pm on a Tuesday. it was shocking.

I'm still trying to work up excitement for the steampunk thing that I'm leaving for on thursday and I have none.

I forgot to share these badges for bingos at [community profile] allbingo check them out )

So let me go back to one of my earliest (and my forever) fandom for fannish 50: Star Trek, the original series.

Let's be honest, there aren't a lot of women to pick from in the main cast. Uhura, Christine and Rand.

Yeoman Rand got the short end of the stick and sexually harassed off the show by a producer.

Christine is in a traditional female role of nurse. I liked her well enough.

But the one I really liked, especially now that I'm older and can appreciate her more (I liked Christine more when I was young). By now most of us probably have heard the story of how Nichelle wanted to leave the show after S1 but MLK told her to stay, that she was far too important to African Americans to quit.

We hear people joke how Uhura is just the space phone operator and that is unfair and reductive. She did so much more, especially in S1 (I did notice that when the censors and conservatives realized Star Trek was SO popular both Uhura and Sulu's roles were reduced to communications and helm. Even if all she did was communications, it was enough that she repped Black women as officers, as having agency which they did not have much of in the 1960s.

But Uhura did more.

Uhura was asked to - and expected to - take over the helm. Which she did. With no problems. She was obviously trained to do multiple bridge jobs. She could have been on the path to command for all we knew (and in later movies she was in fact a captain). Uhura was always more than a telephone operator.

In the next picture we can see her, weapon in hand and a look on her face that is not fear. Okay I'll admit it. She (and all the women) were written inconsistently when it came to their grit. That's what happens when you have multiple authors. But here, Uhura is ready to throw down. She really got to shine in the Mirror universe but I didn't share that picture because A) it's everywhere B) it's rather exploitive

I love that they did try to give her more depth much of which we owe to Nichelle herself. She was the one who gave Uhura the first name Nyota post series (upset that no one ever bothered during the show). When Uhura lost all her memories it was Nichelle who decided no, English is not her first language. She chose Swahili for Uhura.

Nichelle was more interested in music than acting in many ways from what I've read and heard her say. She was also partially why we see Uhura singing, dancing and playing music. I loved these little details (along with Sulu being a botany enthusiast which disappears after S1)

I love that the actors got to have some input in character development. Nichelle (George and Leonard) did especially well with hers.

News & Views: Deep fried Oreos edition

1. I took the boys to the county fair this afternoon after work so that we could support the cross-country booster booth which was selling deep fried Oreos.

We rode swings and Ferris wheel and something like a spaceship (they rode more, of course, I rode the merry-go-round) ate Oreos and funnel cakes and looked at animals and picked up local honey for the boys' father. It was a good evening. The weather was okay. Not crazy hot.

2. Today the rental car went back. I think the boys' father has decided what the new car (okapi replacement) should be, but he hasn't bought it yet. I think he is going to buy it this weekend because next weekend they'll be in Winnipeg.

3. I am trying to read The Handmaid's Tale, but, jeez, does it cut too close to reality. I can only read one chapter at a time. My sheep detective novel is a bit confusing. It is translated from German but set in Ireland and POV sheep with some woo-woo thrown in. And the main sheep detective is Miss Maple, not Miss Marple.

Not much else going on.

Book Review: The Bell Jar

Another book? Yup, another book

Title: The Bell Jar
Author: Sylvia Plath
Genre: Fiction

Characters: 6.5
Atmosphere/Setting: 6
Writing: 8
Plot: 7
Intrigue: 6
Logic/Relationships: 5
Enjoyment: 6

=43.5/7 = 6.2 = 3 Stars

It was decent. Nothing spectacular, but not bad, either. I think it got so much attention because mental health was such a taboo subject during the 60s, so an insider look was titillating. I've read better novels about being mentally unwell and going through the process of getting better. I don't think this book did a good job of showing the actual healing, though. Her characterization seemed pretty constant.
